Boksburg sports personalities share their new year’s resolutions

The Boksburg North SAPS is warning the community to beware of a one-legged man walking on crutches who allegedly commits fraud.

The Advertiser spoke to a few local sports stars about their new year’s resolutions.

* Barend Nienaber (MMA/EFC Africa fighter)

My new year’s resolution is to enjoy what I do. It takes a lot to stay motivated and to become better at whatever it is you set your mind on.

But the first thing I told myself was to get the hunger back for the sport I love: MMA. My weight cut has always been the challenge and so I have decided to move up a division. You will soon see a new BB Gun in the lightweight division.

My dreams will always have obstacles, but that is what makes it so much more fun to achieve.

A challenge is in man’s nature. The bigger the challenge the better we become.

So my new year’s resolution is to set the bar high and do everything I can to get over any obstacle that gets put in my way.

We all have set goals for 2017. For starters, I would like to be a better, happier person. It all starts with your thoughts, because your thought patterns become your behaviour, which turns into your actions (good or bad). I’d like to be more positive, seeing the humour in life rather than being too serious.

Sweeping away the negative and surrounding myself with positive people. To use my words in such a way that they are influential and inspiring to the people I talk to.

To take control of what I can control and be a bit more relaxed, and work on my patience, especially in traffic.

With that being said, I want to be a better mom and businesswoman too.

On the fitness side, I’d like to make improvements to my body, to be in even more phenomenal shape than in 2016. Drink more water and sleep more. I have a couple of competitions lined up as well as a photo shoot with world-class American photographer Kai York in May. My first competition is also in May, which is a big one, as they will be handing out pro cards. So my goal is to aim for one of those ‘babies’.

I’m very privileged as my one resolution was fulfilled – got a hair sponsor: Mundells Hairdressing. Not forgetting Hannon as one of my main sponsors as well as 180 Degrees with Lance Jacobson and Tweak with Jolene Levinson.

Spending more time with my family, as time is precious – spend it wisely. More mommy-daughter time (they grow up so quickly) and doing activity sport with my daughter, such as mountain biking, etc. I have set my goals for the businesses as well. I also want to get more involved and give back to charity.

* Tommy Oosthuizen (Pugilist)

My new year’s resolution is getting closer to a super-fight with Andre Ward. Nobody has beaten him, so he’s the man to beat in the light-heavyweight division. I’m becoming a father this year, so now it’s time to lead by an example and prove to myself that I can man up and provide for my child and be not only a man but the man.

I’m hoping to get the number-one fight and become a super champion. I believe God will bless me if I show Him I want it by giving the top of my efforts.

* Nicholas Lockyer (CBC cricket captain)

I suppose a new year’s resolution for any sportsman is firstly try and get rid of the excess weight gained during the December holiday as quickly as possible. Personally I feel one of my biggest resolutions for 2017 is to learn from situations and outcomes I get put in, on and off a cricket field.

I want to be the best captain for my team, and for that to happen I feel I need to learn how to analyse situations quicker and deal with them in a manner that will put my team in a better position. From the team’s point of view, I think we would want to be more consistent.

The boys are playing great cricket and we have performed very well under the pressure we have put on ourselves… But I think as a team we are currently playing at a consistent 75-80 per cent and we want to rather be pushing that 95-100 per cent. The boys seem very keen for this second half, so I do believe that the boys are up for the challenge.

* Brent Harran (superbiker)

I am currently waiting on a potentially big sponsor. Contracts have been handed out and so on, but we are just waiting for the funds. I’ll be riding a Kawasaki ZX10 again and I really want to have a solid go at the Super GP Championship this year.

* Travis Howell (Boksburg Rugby Club captain)

My new year’s resolution would be to lead my team to the final this year and to go into the Gold Cup. As a captain, I would like to get to know all my teammates personally and to help them grow in the sport. As a team I think the team’s new year’s resolution is to improve on the good season we had last year and to step up to the next level and win the league.

* JP Kruger (MMA/EFC Africa fighter)

This year I’ve got a few grappling tournaments lined up, putting myself out there and embracing the grind. This year I want to move most of my focus to my athletes and even my little champs. I want to make sure they get the best one can give… walking the journey with them… I want to make sure we achieve the results.

* Melvin Kruger (Boksburg Football Club coach)

I just want to help BFC restore our pride and to develop more young footballers to reach their potential and grow into talented, responsible and respectful young men with godly principles.

* Marcell Fourie (Boksburg Rugby Club coach)

Well, as the coach, our resolution is to be better in every aspect of what we did wrong last season. We have to pick up the broken pieces and fix it.

* Ruan Potts (Former EFC heavyweight champion)

This year I’ll be pursuing the ultimate goal in our organisation, namely the EFC Worldwide Heavyweight World Title. I will be competing against the United Kingdom’s Karl Etherington in April, and if all goes according to plan, I will come home with the win. I will get my long-awaited title challenge against the title holder at the time. The current champion is Andrew van Zyl. This will be the fourth time we will meet and the first time two opponents will face each other for four times in the organisation.

* Fanie van Staden (East Rand United captain)

Personal resolution: Joining East Rand United three years ago was not a decision that I made half-halfheartedly. My personal goals has always been to try inspire the youngsters of Reiger Park especially given the hardship they face to join a cause of brotherhood that encourages positive living. That’s why I set out my three-year plan, this being my last year of winning the season as I believe the higher we rise the more hope we can give to our community.  It’s all about the bigger picture, therefore I’m certain we will succeed in our endeavour.

On behalf of the team: Last year we did not reach our new year’s resolution as a team which has only added to our hunger of accomplishing our goals this year. We will never give up. Our destination for the year is participating in the Gold Cup and encouraging diversity in the rugby club environment which is well needed. We want to make our rugby union and among others, our main sponsor Phakisa Holidings, proud.

* Glen Brierley (CBC FC coach)

From my point of view on the coaching side, we would like to bring in some new blood into the squad as we try to keep continuity of the club and competition strong within the team.

From the team’s point of view, we would have to set the bar high with the successful season we had last year. We looking to defend the league title and to achieve what we fell short of: the cup final. We’re looking to go on and complete the double this season. We seem to be setting the standards high but we need to build on the success of last season and keep the momentum going forward.
