With bad news dominating the media due to the pandemic, we take a look at some good news in the Boksburg sporting arena in a recap between January and national lockdown on March 26

Oosthuizen buries Time Square nightmare

Beyers Park striker Billy Oosthuizen returned to winning ways when he defeated Aly Kalambay via unanimous decision in their featherweight clash during EFC 84 at Time Square in Pretoria. The result saw Oosthuizen improve his record to 4-3-0, while Kalambay was made to wait longer for his first ‘W’ as he fell to 0-3-0.

Cree included in SA baseball squad to the US

South African baseball player Kieran Cree (29) was included in the men’s national baseball side which was supposed to participate at 2021 World Baseball Classic (WBC) qualifiers in Tucson, Arizona, USA. The qualifiers were meant to be held from mid to end of March. Cree, who also plies his trade for the Boksburg Cardinals, earned his first national cap at the age of 17.

CBC captain shines in important win

It was a case of cometh the hour, cometh the man as CBC Old Boys captain Casey Arnold scored 104 runs in a must-win Top 6 match to lead his side to victory.

Northern region launch exciting Super League

Northern region rugby unions introduced the TW Profile Super League and Trophy competitions at the back of last year’s successful Volcano competitions. They are cross-border competitions between the premier clubs of the Blue Bulls, Valke and the Leopards. Tuks are the defending Super League and Carlton champions, while QBR won an exciting u-20 competition last year.

Kian Keylock unlocks another swimming record

Boksburg’s very own swimming sensation Kian Keylock blitzed to a finishing time of 30:24 seconds to set a new South African u-14 boys 50m breaststroke record at the Grand Prix Invitational Swimming meet in Durban. The CBC Boksburg star broke the old record of 30:37 set in 2016 by Joshua Hamilton. Keylock now holds both the 50 and 100m breaststroke u-14 boys national records.

Boksburg XI pulls one out of the hat

The Boksburg Cricket Club produced a comeback that would even impress Lazarus as they delivered a four-run smash-and-grab job to defeat Eastern Premier League title favourites Benoni Northerns in their own back yard. The encounter, which was a Top 6 clash of the 2019/20 Eastern Premier League season, saw the visitors come in as heavy underdogs. This follows their embarrassing loss to the same opponent two weeks earlier, with Northerns winning that one comfortably by 10 wickets.

CBC beat Benoni at their home ground

CBC Old Boys kept their chances of Eastern Premier League play-off cricket alive with a dramatic eight-run win over Benoni Northerns in Benoni in their Eastern Cricket Premier League Top 6 clash. The win saw both Boksburg sides defeat the highly fancied Northerns in the same month.

Another Dis-Chem Ride for Sight win for the Day brothers

Dusty Day emerged as the winner of the 2020 Dis-Chem Ride for Sight as he led an elite group and held on to cross the line in 2:34:14 at the Boksburg City Stadium.Day?s brother, Tyler, won the event in 2015, making the pair the only brothers to have both won this event in its history.

Tommy Gun set to return to squared circle

East Rand boxer Thomas “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen was set to return to the squared circle at Emperors Palace on March 21 in a big opportunity to revive his career. The Advertiser travelled with the pugilist along with trainer Harold Volbrecht to finalise the deal at the Golden Gloves headquarters in Johannesburg. However, the controversial fighter would soon jeopardise the opportunity as news emerged soon after of him having allegedly attacked a man in a Boksburg bar in November last year. This landed him in trouble with the law again.

Former Vereeniging Rugby Club stalwart Lukas van der Schyff was announced as the new head coach of the Makopano Boksburg Rugby Club senior team. He replaced Francois Erasmus.
