Boksburg’s Keylock too good for the chasing
The CBC Boksburg swimmer smashed a whopping 12 u-14 district records
South African u-14 double record holder Kian Keylock was recently named the highest ranked u-14 swimmer for the compromised 2019/20 aquatic season.
The swimming season normally runs between May 1 and the end of April the following year, but the 2019/2020 season had to be cut short because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
To determine a swimmer’s ranking at the end of each season, Swimming South Africa takes the times swam by each swimmer at different galas throughout the season and the swimmer with the fastest times is ranked higher.
During the 2019/2020 season, Keylock was ranked first for the 200m freestyle; 100 and 200m backstroke; 50 and 100m breaststroke (set new SA boys u-14 records for both disciplines); 200m breaststroke; 50, 100 and 200m butterfly, as well as the 200 and 400m individual medley. He finished as the second-ranked swimmer in the 100, 400 and 1 500m freestyle.

Furthermore, the CBC Boksburg superstar smashed a whopping 12 u-14 district records (Eastern Gauteng), namely the 200, 400 and 1 500m freestyle; the 100 and 200m backstroke; the 50, 100 and 200m breaststroke; the 100 and 200m butterfly and the 200 and 400m individual medley.
Speaking to the Advertiser about yet another scintillating addition to his aquatic résumé, Keylock surprisingly voiced his frustrations: “Honestly, in my opinion, it’s not good enough. I could’ve and should’ve been ranked first in all of them (his disciplines).
“I kind of let go a bit towards the end of the season. I also assumed I would swim junior nationals and do better, so I kind of slacked in other galas, but it’s made me realise every gala is as important as the last and made me work harder.”
The Boksburg star was also named the top swimmer in his age group during the Junior African Games.
Keylock has turned his attention to the 2020/21 campaign, where he’s eyeing qualifications for the Junior African Games, Junior Worlds and the Youth Commonwealth Games, which are all scheduled to take place next year.
