Get your marathon fix by ‘running’ Race the Comrades Legends

Entry is free for all South African runners who had entered to participate in this year's Comrades

Comrades Marathon organisers have come up with a plan to give desperate runners a taste of action in form of a virtual race dubbed “Race the Comrades Legends”.

The news was confirmed by the announcement from the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) earlier on May 18. Runners from all over the world are invited to participate in the race, which is scheduled to take place on June 14, the date that had been chosen for this year’s 95th edition of the ultra-marathon.

Entry is free for all South African runners who had entered to participate in this year’s Comrades. To be part of what is set to be one of the biggest-ever recorded virtual races, runners are required to visit the Comrades’ website and register for the “Race the Comrades Legends” where you will be provided with four options: The five, 10, 45 or 90km distance.

The virtual race will create an opportunity for dedicated runners to engage with other athletes globally with strict precautions for the safety and convenience of athletes; and will be organised within the constraints of the government’s national lockdown regulations.

CMA chairperson Cheryl Winn said: “We welcome all athletes to be a part of ‘Race the Comrades Legends’. This is one of those innovations that will add to the Comrades spirit on June 14 on what would have been our 95th race day, but has obviously had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“As always, we expect that our athletes will take the necessary precautions and observe the relevant constraints of the national lockdown and adhere to social distancing norms, no matter which country you are in. However, this is one race in which we wish to unite South Africa and the world in one amazing virtual event.”

The original format of the race was recently cancelled amid the coronavirus pandemic.
