Owls run rampant against Germiston

The Simmer play their rugby in the second division of the Senior Grand Challenge League.

TW Boksburg Rugby Club warmed up with a resounding 57-26 win over the Germiston Simmer Rugby Club during the Springs Rugby Day on February 29.

The same glitches that Boksburg coach Lukas van der Schyff said needed serious attention during their tour to Thabazimbi where their pre-season calendar began, like match fitness, re-emerged on the day.

It was, however, not quite like their first 80 minutes of the year in Thabazimbi, where the Owls blew hot and cold.

It was a much more improved performance, with the Prince George Park outfit warming up accordingly as they seem to be ascending right on schedule with their season’s first competitive game scheduled for next Saturday (March 21) in a TW Trophy match against NWU Vaal at home.

They outscored the opposition nine tries to four, with the Owls’ Martin van Wyk walking away with the biggest smile at the back of his three tries. Wing Brandon Swart, who also scored in the side’s 28-21 victory in Thabazimbi, continued his fine try-scoring form with a brace.

Blockbusting midfielder Damian Diedericks also scored a pair of touchdowns, with Joe Meyer and loose forward Deon Smit each crossing the white wash once apiece.

The opposition, meanwhile, who were boosted in the off-season by the arrival of a plethora of former East Rand United stars, had Clayton Gindan, a member of the influx, wing Tarrquin van der Westhuizen and backrow forward Quinton van der Schyff join him in the try-scoring column.

Next stop for the Owls is their last pre-season outing at the Nigel Rugby Day before the NWU Vaal showdown.
