Dump sites frustrate Bartlett residents

Residents of Bartlett are irritated by the dump sites to be found in the area.

Thousands of tons of solid waste from domestic households and commercial establishments are being dumped.

The two empty lots located at the corner of Ridge and Atlas roads, and the third empty lot located at the corner of Yaldwyn Road and Jan Smuts Avenue, have become dumping grounds for building materials, household waste, animal bones, refuse bags, rubbles, chopped trees and furniture.

Even the “No Dumping” signs warn people not to dump waste, they have proved ineffective in deterring people from dumping.

According to a concerned resident, Margaret Vorster, truckloads of waste are unloaded in the area on a weekly basis, posing serious health hazard to the residents living nearby. Vorster says she and her family were considering moving from the area, because they can’t stand the unbearable scent coming from the nearby dumpsites.

“I hate litter and I can’t stand this for the rest of my life,” says Vorster.

“I tried to report the problem to the municipality without luck.”

The garbage also brings with it a host of diseases and attracts rats, mice and other rodents, ticks, flies and mosquitoes.

The metro has provided no comment at the time of going to press.

The open veld at the corner of Yaldwyn and Jan Smuts Avenue has become a dumping grounds for building materials, household waste, animal bones, refuse bags, rubbles, chopped trees and furniture. Residents say truckloads of waste are unloaded in the area on a daily basis.

  1. I live in Cape Town and was just surfing the internet to see what Boksburg is like and came across the article “Dump sites frustrate Bartlett residents”. I think this is disgusting and the people who works at your municipality should be dismissed for poor work performance. Really people, dumping is illegal and if the municipality of Bartlett does not react to this problem, they are stealing the money of the tax payers. Come on, what’s wrong with you????
