According to Boksburg SAPS communications officer, Lt Mathanda Ngobese, the men allegedly went in the tanks to clean them but were not wearing ventilation apparatus.
“They appear to have breathed in the fumes which made them delirious and rendered them unconscious in the tanks.
“One of the men is said to have tried to come up for help before passing out underground. He fell back down the tank before getting out,” says Ngobese.
EMS communications officer, William Ntladi, says the first rescue attempt began at 9.50am.
“The first man retrieved from the tank was treated on the scene and taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital but the second rescue attempt was not as fortunate as he died on the scene,” he says.
“Someone let the men inside those tanks and because there is fatality, there needs to accountability.”
The SAPS and Department of Labour are investigating the matter.
