Man hospitalised after suicide attempt, charged with possession of illegal firearm

The suspect is reportedly still in a serious condition in hospital where he is under police guard, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A 23-year-old man who reportedly shot himself several times, in what police describe as an attempted suicide, is fighting for his life in hospital, and faces a criminal offence.

According to the Reiger Park police, at about 4pm on November 21, officers received a complaint of suicide in Joe Slovo informal settlements, and they rushed to the scene where they found the man lying in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds to his lower body.

Paramedics were called and took him to Tambo Memorial Hospital for medical attention. Police discovered the firearm, a Norinco 9mm pistol, and believe it was used in the attempted suicide.

It also emerged that the weapon does not belong to the 23-year-old man, meaning that he was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The rightful owner of the firearm had died, and police were now trying to establish as to how the injured man got hold of the firearm.
