A passenger was on November 19 held at gunpoint in a taxi and robbed of money, cellphone and a pair of sneakers, before he was dumped near the CTM on corner North Rand and Trichardts roads.
The victim told the police that he was waiting on Heidelburg Road for a taxi to Benoni before the minibus taxi arrived.
He got into the taxi, a white Toyota Quantum, after the driver told him that it was heading to Benoni.
After the taxi had travelled a few metres, one of three persons he thought were also passengers pointed a gun at him while the taxi was moving.
He was forced to lie down in between the seats before the thugs helped themselves to his belongings.
To rub salt into the wound, after noticing that their target had a banking app on his phone, the robbers forced the victim to give them the personal identification number (PIN).
A total of R10 000 was then stolen from the victim’s bank account. The thugs also used the victim’s app to buy an airtime voucher. In similar incident, a Ramaphosa man was robbed of his belongings by three men travelling in a white Toyota Quantum on November 20.
The victim got into the minibus taxi on Trichardts Road at about 5.15pm and found two men who he thought were passengers, and the driver.
All of a sudden, one of the men took out a gun and aimed it at the victim and stole his two cellphones, a Huawei and Samsung.
As if that was not enough, the thugs took the victim’s bank card and issued him an ultimatum to call his family members to ask that they deposit at least R2 000 into his account with a threat to kill him should the family fail to comply with their demand.
The money was indeed deposited and the robbers withdrew it before dumping the victim next to Parklands Estate.
