Ramaphosa pugilist gains momentum ahead of SA championships
Makofane won both his four-minute-long bouts via points.
Ramaphosa pugilist Gilbert Makofane amplified his name in the amateur boxing fraternity when he recently won gold in Mauritius.
The 22-year-old, who fights in the 56kg category, won two of his fights, a semi and a final, to win gold and picked up momentum heading into the South African Championships in Kimberley.
The Boksburg Boxing Club student said: “I was very excited and happy. I can’t even explain the feeling. I told myself that I won’t lose; not after coming this far.”
Makofane’s trainer, Piet van Vuuren, added: “This guy is something else. It’s an excellent achievement and he’s going places.”

Van Vuuren also extended an invitation to boxers who want to improve their craft or young men who want to take up the sport to join the Boksburg Boxing Club.
Interested boxers can contact the trainer on 082 330 1018.
“I need more boxers, I want to make more of them great and keep them away from trouble,” said the trainer.
Training days are Mondays and Thursdays from 6pm.
