Bonus-point victory for United against Springs

The stakes will remain high as usual as the return match between the two sides is next in either side’s fixture list, with United travelling to Springs this weekend (July 6).

Home side East Rand United were ready to play as they hosted cross-town rivals Springs Rugby Club for their Volcano Super Cup tie on June 22.

United had not forgotten their painful Peregrine League final loss against the same opponents late last year and the Reiger Park outfit were boosted by the returns of some few key players to the starting XV.

Moreover, and perhaps most importantly, United were back at their home ground in Reiger Park, The Graveyard, where they’re undoubtedly at their best.

And at their best they were.

As seen in the past between these two super powers in Valke club rugby, it was a high-scoring affair as United avenged their final loss in a convincing 47-34 much-needed bonus-point victory.

Under the leadership of incumbent captain Jonathan Botha, who was also a casualty on the injury list, United scored seven tries on their way to victory, with menacing full back Cameron Lentoor converting five.

The tries arrived courtesy of loose forward Peter Mnguni and backs Tiaan Ramat, Cameron Rooi, Lentoor and Jacky Jonkers.

There was also firepower from the bench with forward Kholisile Mcoco and back Litha Vumisa, both scoring a try each.

Elsewhere, United’s second side was edged 33-30 while both the third unit and u-21 sides won 43-7 and 48-19 respectively.
