ER United enjoy first Volcano Cup win of the season

The occasion, a spectacle in its own right, was heightened by the fact that it was televised.

East Rand United broke their Volcano Super Cup hoodoo with a convincing 30-22 victory over Newrak Impala in Rustenburg on May 19.

The win had long been coming to be fair to United, who’ve been showing promise despite the demoralising threat of defeat after defeat, in the tournament.

Their perseverance however, has apparently paid dividends and true to their motto, they never quit heading to the North-West province. The return was not just a win but a bonus point win thanks to four scores courtesy of loose forward Peter Mnguni, half-back Dustin Losch, former half-back Tiaan Ramat and midfielder Waylon Thompson.

A hard to impress man, but even coach Alvandre Maart lauded his charges’ effort but resisted temptation of getting carried away.

Congratulated for the fulcrum of the encounter, the tactician commented: “Yes, credit to the boys, we played well by spreading the ball to the wings and kicking behind them; but things changed in the second-half when we tried to take them on in front.

“The players didn’t stick to our game plan but still, the big focus point is the skill level of the players, a focus we will keep working on.”

Full-back Cameron Lentoor scored all of United’s extra points from the boot, burying two conversions and the same number of penalties.

Elsewhere, United’s third team fell 21-12 before the second side was agonisingly edged 36-34 in the main event’s curtain raiser.
