Rampant Old Boys crush United

CBC recently enjoyed a dominant win against Boksburg.

A red-hot CBC Old Boys outfit made quick work of United Cricket Club in an impressive eight-wicket bonus-point away win at Hosking Park.

The Eastern Cricket Premier League encounter, which saw the in-form away side secure a play-off spot after solidifying their second position on the log behind Benoni Northerns, was played on January 27.

Having been sent to bat first, the home side offered little to no resistance with the willow as Old Boys bowlers tore into their batting order.

Proceedings could’ve been much worse for United had it not been for their stubborn captain, Justin Gamble, who took on Old Boys’ formidable bowling attack for his knock of 55.

But after United’s star wicket was removed, it was all she wrote for United’s time behind the crease as Old Boys bowlers forced a collapse in the United batting order.

Gamble and top order hitter Braden Grutter (20) were the only two to hit double-digit scores as United surrendered at 98 all-out after 32.3 overs.

Old Boys pair Craig Parker and Tyrone Cameron took three wickets each, finishing with 3/18; 1 and 3/24 respectively.

Teammates Matthew Varner 2/27; 1, Keith Bennie 1/5 and skipper Casey Arnold 1/5 were the other wicket-takers.

A disappointed Gamble, who also led from the front for his team in the bowling stakes (2/13; 2), said: “It’s the story of our season really: no partnerships, losing our wickets cheaply and not batting out our 50 overs.

“CBC bowled really well, they’re a good opposition. They put us under a lot of pressure and exploited our mistakes.”

On his one-man show performance, the skipper explained: “I suppose my performance was good on the day. I tried my best, but you’re never going to beat a team like CBC defending 98.”

Old boys duo Dylan Bennie (unbeaten 15) and Rynard de Lange (undefeated 4) took the travellers over the hump after batting talisman Mark Pearse all but put the result beyond doubt with his own innings of 61.

Prompted for his thoughts on the ruthlessly clinical performance, a delighted Arnold explained: “Our bowling has been good and we put sustained pressure on our opponents.

“I’m really happy, the boys played well. This was our most complete performance.” –
