The Advertiser chats to the to BCC chair Bruce Forbes
Forbes reveals some very interesting facts about himself. The BCC chair is also the father of BCC captain and top-order batsman Adam.
Boksburg Cricket Club chairperson Bruce Forbes took time off his busy schedule to chat with the Advertiser.
The Advertiser asked:
How long have you been chairperson for?
Five years.
What does your typical day look like in a chairperson capacity?
My role is big on admin work, it’s all about managing and foreseeing everything within the club runs smoothly.
What kind of challenges do you face as the chairperson?
Players, recruiting them and making sure they stay committed to the club. Facilities, PG Park maintenance is my biggest challenge, by a mile.
What do you enjoy most about being chairperson?
The passion I have for the club. The most important thing to me is keeping Boksburg on the map.
What do you do for a living?
I’m an entrepreneur. I do a little bit of everything.
Were you a cricketer yourself?
Yes, actually played for the Boksburg Cricket Club and Benoni Northerns.
How long does your tenure as chairperson run for?
We work on a voting system, a tenure lasts four years. You can then either be voted for to do another term or someone else takes over.
Getting into the on-field side of things, apart from Rowan, are there any other signings made?
Yes, we’ve brought in Dylan Matthews and Willie Moolman. There’s more but I can’t reveal the names just yet.
I believe the club has once gone all the way and actually won the club champs, when was this and why have the glory days proven difficult to sustain?
Yes, we’re the only club from Easterns to have won the National Club Championships, in 2000. Well, players come and go and unfortunately, those players’ time had to come to an end. In fact, two members of that squad are our coaches: Shawn Schaper being our head coach and Colin Kruger our assistant.
How many children do you have, including Adam?
Just two; my firstborn daughter’s name is Shannon – she’s a teacher, then Adam.
BMW or Mercedes-Benz?
Mercedes – always.
What car do you drive?
Fortuner.
I need your favourite player of all time in the following respective categories: bowling, fielding and batting.
Allan Donald, Jonty Rhodes and Sachin Tendulkar.
Where are you originally from?
I was born in PE and moved to Gauteng in 1984.
Which high school and tertiary did you go to?
I’m a Boksburg High boy, and I didn’t go to tertiary. I just worked hard.
What’s your favourite TV programme?
Channels 200 to 208.
What do you do in your spare time?
I still play cricket. I cycle almost every day; I’m a very sporty person. I actually played action cricket for South Africa and travelled the world. I’ve been to five world cups and captained four. I played 72 tests for South Africa.
Anything else you would like to add?
My best interest is to keep Boksburg Cricket Club on the map like I mentioned; and without the coaches and parents, the club wouldn’t be here. It’s not about me, it has little to nothing to do about me, it’s about our hard working coaches and supportive parents. – @SabeloBoksburg
