Return cruiserweight title bout promises thrills
The rematch is scheduled to take place on December 8 at Emperors Palace.
Cruiserweight heavyweights Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen and Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu have signed for a rematch following their close 12-rounder at Emperors Palace on September 1.
The two will square off at the Golden Gloves event dubbed ‘Repeat or Revenge’ following their close encounter at ‘Call to Glory’, where Oosthuizen picked up a majority decision win 115-113 (twice) and 114-114.
It was a decision that split the boxing fraternity down the middle with the majority of fans suggesting that it was a bias decision.
It was also a decision which marred an intriguing contest and Oosthuizen’s remarkable return to the top level.
Golden Gloves has ensured that the return bout excludes complaints of bias by calling on neutral officials to handle the big one.
According to the Golden Gloves website, a South African, an Italian and a Ghanaian judge will be entrusted to call it down the middle.
Golden Gloves promoter Rodney Berman said: “I’m delighted to have done the deal. It was a pleasure dealing with both camps, who were very easy to deal with.”
On the neutral officials, Berman commented: “I think this is the way to go. These guys (Oosthuizen and Mchunu) are so evenly matched, with little to separate between them and there’s enough on the line to ensure another absorbing fight.”
The star-studded fight card will also include IBO welterweight champion Thulane Mbenge, who will be defending his title.
When quizzed on the rematch, Oosthuizen trainer Harold Volbrecht said: “Well, the Mchunu camp felt it was a close fight but I just think it means Tommy will be in bigger and better shape. It will just give him more time to prepare.”
The event couldn’t have been dubbed more accurately. It will either see Oosthuizen repeating his performance or Mchunu getting revenge.
