Kriel in line for world title
THE time is right for DeeJay Kriel to show his worth when he takes on Dexter Alimento, from the Philippines.
In a match sponsored by AfricanRing Promotions, the two will battle it out for the vacant WBC minimum-weight belt on July 23, at Emperors Palace.
Both boxers made the 30-day weigh-in limit, Kriel coming in at 50.25kg and the former WBC minimum-weight youth champion Alimento at 52.61kg.
To outclass Alimento will steer Kriel a step towards the WBC top 15 rankings and a possibility to challenge the WBC world champion, undefeated 47-0 Thailander Chayaphon Moonsri, known as Wanheng Menayothin.
Kriel, who hails from Boksburg, at the age of 22 has a healthy record of eleven fights, one loss, one draw and six KO’s.
The 21-year-old Alimento is evenly matched with the South African and has a record of twelve fights, one loss and eight KO’s.
Xolisani Ndongeni will also be in action at the AfricanRing boxing tournament on the same day. The lightweight will be back at Emperors Palace in 15 months time.
Unfortunately, the Jason Bedeman fight was cancelled after Jared Silverman was knocked out in Cape Town on Friday.
