Witfield’s own crowned SA pool champ

Local pool player Pieter du Toit has been crowned the South African 8-Ball champion for the first time.

Du Toit, 40, who has been playing the game on national level for the last 15 years, finally landed the championship which eluded him for more than a decade.

This paid testament to the level of difficulty in achieving the honour.

The reticent 8’s Pool and Sports Bar owner said: “It was an overwhelming feeling, it’s been hard. I’ve been playing for 15 to 20 years and it’s only my first time winning the national championship. The hard work has paid off.”

The tournament was held last month in Shelly Beach, KwaZulu-Natal.

Du Toit was also involved in the doubles tournament where he and partner Craig Moodley finished as runner-ups.

In 2015 he represented the SA team at the World Pool Championships. The team was knocked out in the quarter-finals.

The 8’s Pool and Sports Bar hosts numerous weekly tournaments.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are different Eastern League competitions. Thursday the club holds a social league and Saturday welcomes open competitions.

The club welcomes any pool player or anyone interested in playing the sport. The 8’s Pool and Sports Bar can be found at No. 142, corner Main Street and Pretoria Road, Witfield. – @SabeloBoksburg
