Hansa Canoe Marathon preparations heat up

For a change, the weather in the Free State co-operated and the 64km two-day river race recently hosted by the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club (Emmarentia Dam) had superb weather.

The race began in Reitz and ended in Tweeling.

The river flows well, as water is pumped from the Lesotho Highlands Project to the Vaal Dam.

There are enormous, enjoyable fun wave trains around corners for the paddlers to enjoy their build-up of stamina and gain good seeding for the upcoming A grade Hansa Fish Canoe Marathon, in October, in Cradock.

Ray Davidson, a member of the Homestead-based club and a resident in Boksburg, finished the race in six hours;36 minutes and thoroughly enjoyed it, despite a few swims and difficulties on the learning curve.
