Super League: Highlands Park pile on Boksburg’s misery
Highlands Park thrashed ELFA Super League rivals, the Boksburg Football Club, 6-1 in a league encounter, on Saturday, August 8.
The result has further dimmed the light at the end of the tunnel for the Blues in their first season in the Super League since their promotion from the Premier League, at the beginning of the campaign.
Their remaining fixtures will all but serve as relegation battles.
It’s been a difficult campaign for the Boksburg City Stadium outfit, whose expectations were high following an impressive, almost flawless Premier League run last year, which earned them ascension to the Super division.
But they’ve since failed to emulate those heroics, in a campaign tainted by inconsistent player availability and coaching changes – which have affected business on the park.
The team’s latest setback against Highlands was preceded by a string of losses in recent weeks, and possible demotion back to the Premier League lingers – a situation new coach Vivian Maritz vehemently promised to avoid.
Quizzed on his team’s possible relegation, the mentor responded: “It won’t happen, that I can promise you!”
Commenting on the result against Highlands, Maritz said: “I wasn’t impressed with the referee and his assistants’ handling of the game.
“The opposition coach was swearing at them, but nothing happened.
”But, I must say, they (Highlands) deserved the win, we were outplayed and I give credit to the Highlands players.
“I’m not satisfied with our performance, but, on the other hand, we don’t have players, we struggle every week to get a full team. Most of the players left when Brennan Peters left.”
Peters, who took over the coaching reigns at the beginning of the season – recently stepped down from the Blues bench, with professional commitments understood to be the primary reason.
