Search is on for rugby league players

Rugby league club the Boksburg Hooters, is searching for local talent to take part in the 13-a-side sport.

The club accommodates junior players (10-17 years old) and seniors (18+).

“We’re looking to boost rugby league on the East Rand,” said Rugby League South Africa president Dave van Reenen.

“We’re aiming to to take the game to the people and, by doing so, we’re planning to go everywhere on the East Rand, including townships.

”Our search won’t be political, racial or have any sort of interference – we’re just looking to recruit the best players.”

The club’s Life Honorary member is former Springbok player and rugby league great Tom van Vollenhoven.

One of the league’s biggest tournaments is named after him – the Tom van Vollenhoven Cup.

During his playing days, van Vollenhoven amassed a club record of 392 tries in 408 appearances for English side St Helens.

Rugby League, which is mainly played in Gauteng in this country, is also played in the Western Cape, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

Players interested in registering for rugby league may contact van Reenen on 084 831 9778, or Gauteng Rugby League president Johan Roodt on 083 744 4216.

Players who played for the Boksburg Vikings between 1962 and 1963 can also contact van Reenen – @SabeloBoksburg
