Murder rate demands action

With 105 people reportedly having been killed in the four Boksburg policing precincts during the previous financial year, the SAPS crime statistics for 2014/2015 have revealed a disturbing number of murder cases in the Reiger Park policing precinct over the past year.

Under the category violent crime, the police registered 32 murder cases during the 2014/2015 financial year, compared to the 27 reported in the 2013/2014 year.

However, the area has also seen a decline in a number of offences in the violent crime category.

These include robbery carjacking, robbery residential, attempted murder and the aggravated robbery total.

In partnership with the three community forums (CPF, Youth Desk, Women’s Forum) police officers from Reiger Park made sure that attempted murder fell from 46 to 24, robbery carjacking from 30 to 19, robbery residential from 25 to 16, while the robbery aggravated total declined from 196 to 160.

There were also slightly fewer sexual crimes reported in 2015, compared to the 2014 stats, decreasing from 92 to 72.

The stats indicate that (under property related crime) during the 2014/2015 financial year, 39 businesses fell victim to criminals, compared to the 29 offences reported during the 2013/2014 financial year.

Meanwhile, 31 vehicles were stolen during the last year, compared to the 26 stolen the previous year.

A total of 693 drug-related dockets were registered during the previous financial year, which is down from the 729 reported during the 2013/2014 financial year.

Boksburg North and Reiger Park recorded the higher number of drug-related crimes.

Serious crime cases involving culpable homicide, public violence and the neglect and ill treatment of children also rose slightly in Reiger Park.
