Local league to revive the game of tennis

The Aces Tennis League (ATL) is the first private tennis league in South Africa for individual tennis players, with leagues launching later this month, at Parklands Estate, in Boksburg.

The idea behind the ATL is to revive interest in tennis in the country, by allowing players to compete without having to commit to clubs and/or affiliations, or wait for tennis tournaments.

Leagues will allow players of similar skill levels to face-off on a weekly basis.

Matches will be played in accordance with standard tennis scoring, in a best-of-three sets format. The first two sets will be standard, with the third set being a super tie-break to 11 points.

Games will also have no-ad scoring, with the receiver choosing from which side to receive service, from when scores reach deuce.

The leagues will run on a weekly basis, with players in each division playing each other in a round-robin format. Once all the games are completed, the top four players from each division will play in a knock-out ”finals day”, with a semi-final and final to decide final placing.

The finals day will be filled with live entertainment and atmosphere, to promote not only the league, but the players who have participated.

The ATL sponsors for the inaugural season will supply tennis balls, equipment and specials to ATL-registered players, as well as prizes. Along with the prizes will be a loyalty programme run in conjunction with the partner companies of the ATL.

The ATL will also host a website for the leagues, where players can see statistics from matches. The idea is to allow players to monitor their performances and stand chances of winning prizes not only at the end of the season, but spot-prizes during the season, as well.

In addition, the ATL will look to add a channel on You Tube, dedicated to showing highlights, skills and events to not only the players, but the general public.

Leagues starts over the weekend of August 29/30 with players being given time slot games. Parklands Estate can be found on Jubilee Road, Boksburg.
