Easterns cricket’s big fixture: Kempton vs CBC OB

Having both enjoyed flying starts in the cricket campaign’s opening week, Kempton Park and CBC Old Boys will lock horns in a heavyweight clash in which the early pace setters in the elite league could be identified.

Kempton were in rampant mood last weekend against a hapless United side as the defending champions ran away with a 143-run victory.

CBC skipper Willie Bernhardt and his troops will travel to the champions’ territory with high hopes following the taking of another close rival’s scalp: Benoni Northerns.

The men from Boksburg were up against it in their home fixture against Northerns as the visitors set a challenging 233/ 8 in their 50 overs, but CBC star batsman Wesley Coulentianos quashed any excitement from the Benoni camp with his 113 not-out innings to lead his side to an important win.

The match takes place in Kempton on Sunday, October 12.

When asked about his side’s chances against their more fancied opponents this weekend, Bernhardt said: “Look, Kempton has been the strongest club for at least ten years now.

“However, Easterns (club) is playing this weekend, so Kempton will have a few players not in action but they still have a strong back-up system.

“We will field a young side, but the players are quickly gaining experience. It’s time for the young guys to put in those big performances weekly. “We definitely fancy our chances every time we play them; we need to take those half chances that come our way and really make it count.”

Match gets underway at 9.30am.

CBC possible starting XI:

Wesley Coulentianos, Dylan Smalberger, Akshay Maharaj, Nicholas Lockyer, Willie Bernhardt (c), Jan Janse van Rensburg, Dylan Bennie (wk), Dalton Smalberger, Jean Rossouw, Altus Pretorius, Chagan Kruger – @SabeloBoksburg
