Bail denied for five taxi rank gunmen

The 10 men, who on October 2 allegedly opened fire on the people at the Boksburg Taxi Rank in Trichardts Road Road, briefly appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, October 6.

According to the Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Lieut Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese, five of the men were released on R2 500 bail when they appeared on Monday.

The other five were denied bail and remanded in custody.

“All 10 suspects are expected back in court on October 30, when the other five are also expected to formally apply for bail.

“It was found that one of the men has three outstanding murder cases against him – one occurred in Kwa-Zulu Natal and the others in Gauteng. A J50 warrant of arrest was obtained and police were looking for him,” says Ngobese.

People who were at the Boksburg Taxi Rank during the shooting narrowly escaped being struck by bullets, after a gang of gunmen in kombis and a car, allegedly opened fire on the people at the rank on Thursday, October 2.

Police responded soon after the report about a shooting in progress, but the shooters sped off when the police arrived.

The high speed pursuit ended in a multi-vehicle accident crash that injured a driver of a VW Polo, who was at the time driving along the area.

One of the accused shooters, in one of the getaway kombis was also injured.

No injuries were reported at the taxi rank, and the firearms were not recovered.
