Inspiration future stars at Transnet Rural and Farm Schools Tournament
The prestigious Transnet Rural and Farm Schools Tournament took place at the Germiston Stadium between Monday and Wednesday, October 6 and 9, with organisers branding it a ‘huge success’ for learners, coaches and sport officials.
The annual sporting event traditionally begins with over 22 000 learners competing in inter-house challenges across the country, before the number gets whittled down to just 2 000, leaving the more talented students to battle it out at the three-day national event.
This year’s edition saw girls and boys aged between 13 and 19 featuring in netball, soccer, athletics and chess tournaments.
“This programme is about recognising, acknowledging and celebrating success by all our sportsmen and women,” said Transnet board chairman, Mafika Mkwanazi.
“We want to show all South Africans that we are praising the spirit of human triumph and not mediocrity.”
A number of sports stars and celebrities including former Yo-TV presenter Cece, Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune, and former Kaizer Chiefs player Jabu Pule, attended the opening ceremony to support the country’s youth.

Speaking at the event, Khune said that like many of the learners sitting in the grand stands, he was one of them. When he was growing up, he would sit and watch the game, looking up to stars of the game, such as Pule and dreaming about becoming a great soccer player.
