One-on-one with Junior Olympian Jarred Crous
The prolific swimmer, Jarred Crous, from the Jacaranda City, competed at the Boksburg North Indoor Swimming Pool during the Gauteng Schools Swimming Championships, where the Advertiser caught up with him on September 6.
He recently returned from the Nanjing Summer Youth Olympics where he competed in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events, finishing 4th, 6th, 6th respectively.
The 18-year-old was also part of the 4x100m freestyle and medley relay races where team SA finished 8th and 4th respectively.
The Advertiser asked:
What do you make of your performances in China?
The 50 and 100 (metres) I’m happy with; it’s the 200 (metres) I don’t feel good about. I put on a second in my personal best time.
Was this your first international event?
No, my second among multiple local events.
What would you say are the biggest challenges you face as a swimmer?
It’s definitely time management; making time for my friends, family and myself. It’s hard to just make time to chill and go and party with my friends, I even missed my matric farewell this year.
Take me through your training regimen.
I train every day from Monday to Saturday. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, I gym before training.
Mondays and Tuesdays is high intensity training including fitness. Wednesday is recovery day, it’s not too hectic. Thursday is the most hectic day, I always feel like passing out after Thursday training.
Friday is flexibility training, stability for muscles, technique training and lung capacity.
Saturday is long course, start and turns.
Talk about living in the ‘pool’.
What are your biggest achievements?
Participating in the youth Olympic Games obviously, and setting a B-Qualifying time for the recent Commonwealth Games, which was also a new 200m SA breaststroke record.
The following are the Crawford College student’s personal best times:
* 50m breaststroke: 28.46
* 100m breaststroke: 1:02:17
* 200m breaststroke: 2:14:50 – @SabeloBoksburg
