Home driveways a soft target for car thieves

A recent police crime report has indicated that home driveways, garages or residential streets have become the high-risk locations for hijacking and vehicle theft.

In the latest incident, a Boksburg man has been hijacked at gunpoint in his driveway, at about 6am, on Tuesday, April 15.

According to a police spokesperson, Lieut Mathanda Ngobese, the victim told the police that he was closing a gate at his home along Montague Street, Boksburg, while his Golf, valued at R150 000, was parked on the driveway.

“While closing the gate, two men described as African males, confronted him and one of the them pulled out a firearm,” says Ngobese.

They then drove away with the man’s vehicle.

The victim called the police, who later that day discovered the vehicle outside Modderbee, Benoni.

* In another hijacking incident, a woman of Sunward Park was hijacked in her driveway, while waiting for a gate to be opened.

A Dark VW Golf pulled up behind the victim’s vehicle, valued at R 120 000.

Two armed men, also described as African males, got out of the Golf and pointed a firearm at the woman and her passengers, which includes her child.

The suspects drove off in the victim’s vehicle.

No shots were fired and no one was injured in both incidents.

No arrests have been made so far.

The police suspect that groups of criminals are behind the spate of hijacking incidents in Boksburg.
