Afriforum acts against water contamination

The civil rights organisation Afriforum has sent out warning letters to the Ekurhuleni metro regarding the complying with the minimum requirements for treated sewage.

The warnings also contain the Public Access to Information Act (PAIA) applications for water use and waste management licences for all sewage treatment plants.

A PAIA application was also served on the Department of Water Affairs.

Afriforum is also requesting action plans from municipality and deadlines for urgent maintenance and upgrades to the plants.

“Communities give Afriforum a mandate to act against municipalities that endanger the well-being of humans and the environment, as identified in our national Blue and Green Drop Branch Project,” says Afriforum community coordinator for Southern Gauteng, Marcus Pawson.

“Should the municipality fail to respond, Afriforum will pursue legal means to solve the problem, given the urgency of the matter, in order to protect the rights of its members and the public.

“There are also grounds to present the matter to the Public Protector and the South African Human Rights Commission.”
