Debonairs celebrates birthday with community partnership
To celebrate its first birthday, Debonairs Key Largo launched their community partnership with Boksburg Child Welfare on Tuesday, April 1.
Debonairs Key Largo has joined hands with the Boksburg Child Welfare to help ease the burden by supplying them with freshly baked bread on a regular basis and to become a long term partner in the fight against poverty.
“What is better than to launch such a lovely initiative on our birthday and to feed the hungry children?” asks owner of Debonairs Key Largo, Bajith Panday.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme, Debonairs has rolled out a community project called Dough Nation.
By following the stipulated method to produce the perfect pizza, a ball of dough is flattened over a template and trimmed.
Usually, the off-cuts were discarded, but after some research – particularly into food safety – the company realised that the leftover dough could be turned into healthy, nutritious buns.
“Pizza dough is quite stodgy, so it’s tummy-filling,” explains ME of Debonairs Pizza, Andrè Piehl.
The buns are distributed predominantly by a foundation that works with various communities around South Africa.

“We do urge our franchisees in areas that are not covered by the foundation to distribute to a charity of their choice, such as an orphanage or old age home. There are a lot of hungry mouths to feed,” says Piehl.
Annita Cochrane from Boksburg Child Welfare welcomes the donation from Debonairs Key Largo and says that this initiative will go a long way towards feeding some of the hungry mouths we have in the communities we serve.
“I am very overwhelmed, because with today’s economy you don’t get people approaching us and this is just awesome.”
