Centurion dump Boksburg out of Community Cup

Refreshhh! Centurion brought Kaufela Boksburg’s Community Cup debut campaign to an end, with a 58-20 annihilation, at PG Park, on Saturday, March 29.

The teams went into half-time with the score reading 13-10 in favour of the visitors.

Centurion were in rampant form as they outscored the hosts by seven tries to two, in what was Boksburg’s last game in Pool C.

Top spot for the pool remains up for grabs, with leaders Roses United sitting on 13 points, followed by Centurion and G5 Metals, who both sit on 12 points with one game still to play.

The hosts got off to a promising start, with flyhalf Ashley Buchler slotting through a penalty in the ninth minute, before converting Dean Swart’s try five minutes later, to go 10-0 up.

The men from Pretoria had to wait until the mid-point of the first half to get onto the score sheet, as right wing Quentin Horn crossed the whitewash, with Steven Moir adding the extra two points.

Moir put the visitors on level terms five minutes later, with another successful penalty, as the half-time hooter drew near.

Moir completed the turnaround for his side with a further three-pointer, to send them into the break with a slender advantage.

Shortly after the restart, Centurion showed their intent with two quick consecutive tries through inside midfielder Stanley Twiname and Christiaan Burger, with Moir converting both to stretch the visitors’ lead to 17.

Buchler pulled three points back for Boksburg with a penalty to cut the Owls’ deficit to two converted scores.

Four minutes later, the Owls continued to claw their way back, with midfielder Theo Rhodes crossing over for a try.

Buchler converted to make it 27-20, with 58 minutes gone.

Burger kept Boksburg at bay with his second try of the match, with Moir again finding the target before adding another penalty, to give his side a 17-point cushion.

In the 69th minute, Jacques Olivier scored his side’s fifth try, with Moir making no mistake from the conversion to put Centurion 44-20 up.

The men from the capital city added gloss to the scoreboard, with two more tries from replacement forward Xerxes Oosthuizen and Burger, who completed his hat-trick of tries.

Moir converted both to complete his 100 per cent conversion rate.

Boksburg finished fourth in Pool C, with six points, following three losses and one win.
