Boksburg, Brakpan set for historic local derby
History will be made at Brakpan’s Bosman Stadium on Thursday, March 20, as G5 Brakpan and Kaufela Boksburg renew their fierce rivalry in a match that will go a long way in shaping the final standings of Pool C in the Community Cup.
Both sides have had contrasting starts to the tournament.
On the one side, we have the hosts and last season’s bronze medallists, Brakpan, who remain rooted at the bottom of Pool C following their shocking defeat to Roses United.
They will be desperate to get the win in the derby to keep their hopes alive of progressing to the next round of the tournament.
And then there’s Boksburg, who should come in as the more confident side, having made a winning debut in the competition by dismantling a hapless BB Noordelikes side 42-13 in their own backyard, in which flyhalf Ashley Buchler score 17 points.
A win for Boksburg will put them in a great position to qualify for the Easter Championships at their first attempt.
“We must make this game a success so that more games will be televised in future, which will benefit all club rugby on the East Rand,” says Brakpan Rugby Club chairman, Harry Nieuwenhuis.
“We have established a committee between ourselves and Boksburg’s management to ensure that we work together with our communities, and all of our schools to get as much supporters as possible into Bosman Stadium,” he adds, before hinting that the hosts will be going out for maximum points.
“We respect their team, but there won’t be any sentiments on the field of play.”
Boksburg Rugby Club chairman, Sean Scheepers, echoed his counterpart’s sentiments.
“This is a good chance for the two local sides to show what they can do. It’s a good showcase for East Rand rugby, and we are very proud to be given this opportunity.”
Fans that cannot make it to the stadium, can catch the match live on SuperSport 1 and HD at 6pm.
