Boksburg Rugby Club floors Bloemfontein Crusaders

Boksburg Rugby Club got their year off to a perfect start with a friendly home victory over Bloemfontein Crusaders on Saturday, February 8.

The homeside went into half-time 28-5 ahead before securing the match 35-22.

Right-winger Dean Swartz scored a brace of tries with fullback Ashwell Adams and replacements JP Joubert (centre) and John Spence (number eight) grabbing one try a piece.

Two of Boksburg’s tries were converted by fly-half Ashley Buchler and replacement wing, Ferdie Erasmus. Buchler also slotted over two penalties.

Asked about his side’s performance in the match, Boksburg coach, Willie Smith replied: “It was our first game of the season and we used it as a trial (in preparation of the Community Cup). We used a total of 28 players, so we could give everyone a run,” explained the Smith.

Smith hailed the impact the club’s substitutions made when they entered the fray.

“We started with our strongest 15 who did well to get us off to a good start and our replacements allowed us to score three quick tries in succession to secure the win for us.”

The encounter also allowed Smith to point-out two key elements to consider as preparation for the Community Cup continues.

“Our line-outs were a bit of a concern, but it’s something we can work on, however, our backline looked very promising.”

Next for Boksburg is the Delmas Rugby Day on Saturday, February 22, before turning their attention to the Assupol League, which gets underway on March 1.

The team starts its Cell C Community Cup campaign away against BB Truck Noordelikes of Limpopo on March 8.
