Provinces do battle at Juskei Championships
Boksburg played host to the Northern Union Juskei Federation Open Championships on Saturday, November 2.
The event was contested by seven provinces, namely Eastern Gauteng, Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, Gauteng West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North-West.
On a day where both juniors (players aged between 1 8 to 30) and seniors (30 to 50 years of age) shared the field, each province brought a total of nine teams with each team comprising of four members.
One stand-out player who was part of the activities was national woman’s senior team captain Elna van den Berg.
The Springboks (national juskei team) veteran who’s been playing the game for more than 35 years, represented team Gauteng North as they took on their western counterparts – Gauteng West.
Van den Berg has been a Springbok for the past 27 years.
When asked about some of the highlights of her illustrious career, this is what she had to say: “I would say that my greatest achievement in my career is when I overcame breast cancer which forced me to stop playing from 2003 to 2005.”
The Junior Championships took place in Middelburg in early October and the Senior Championships are set to take place in January 2014, in Polokwane.
