Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson, Sam Modiba, says the competition was hosted by Ekurhuleni and the Melting Pot Festival in celebration of the late political stalwart, and one of South Africa’s greatest choral composers – Oliver Reginald Tambo.
The Durban-based group walked away with R250 000 in prize money.
“After its western rendition, the choir got a standing ovation from the crowd,” says Modiba.
Chief executive officer of Clermont Community Choir, Wiseman Mkhize, said the choir was elated with the win.
“We never expected it because we were competing against the best choirs in the field.
“After performing the western rendition, the choir, including myself, just broke down. I guess we were just emotional.”
The Chorale Festival was part of the City’s Tambo Month celebrations, hosted annually in the month of October.
The exciting family affair kept music-lovers entertained through the day with guest performances by the Afro Tenors, Siphokazi and Zakes Bantwini.
