Leslie pumped for Mr Olympia

World Fitness Federation (WFF) and World Bodybuilding Federation (WBBF) bodybuilder John Leslie, from Boksburg, is set to take part in the 2013 WFF-WBBF Professional World Championships Amber Prix Olympia event in Slovakia from November 8 to 10.

WFF and WBBF Africa and South Africa president Tommy du Rand, confirmed the participation of Leslie by handing him his Pro Card on behalf of the World President from Slovakia.

When asked about the qualification process for the Amber Prix Olympia World Championships, Leslie had this to say: “I have been competing for 10 years, winning numerous SA and Mr Universe titles, which qualified me to obtain my WFF-WBBF Pro Card.

“This card entitles me to compete at the 2013 WFF-WBFF Professional World Championships Amber Prix Olympia.

“So it took years of proving myself on the bodybuilding stage locally and internationally to get to this stage and opportunity in my career!”

The 31-year-old Boksburger who began building his body at around 74kg in 1999, went on to describe how much it really takes to hit the zenith of a bodybuilder’s career.

“I started training in a wendy house in my backyard just with a bench, barbell and dumbbell set I bought at Game.”

“It took blood, sweat and tears, literally – and lots of dedication.

“I have been training for over 12 years, six days a week, and spending hours in the gym, especially in preparation for competitions.

“Eating six meals a day for the last 12 or so years is tough, while I had to push and drive myself more to become better. This is the toughest and hardest sport on the planet.”

His six meals per day, which maintains his now 130kg frame, included 12 egg whites, four yolks and oats for breakfast.

He eats a total of 1.5kg consisting of chicken breasts and steak divided over five meals, and basmati rice, which is what he is currently having during the day. His diet changes on the last few days leading to a competition.

Leslie career highlights include winning 10 Mr SA bodybuilding titles between 2004 and 2012, winning the u-23 Mr Universe and super heavyweight Mr Universe titles in 2004, and the overall Mr Universe title in 2008.

He also took some time to share his insight about making it in the sport to young and aspiring bodybuilders.

“Be consistent in your training and diet, stay positive, seek professional help and advice; keep the passion and read as much as you can about training and you will reach your goals.

“Remember consistency is the key to success in bodybuilding.

“I just want to give a big thank you to my sponsors Supplements SA, RDG-Rex Diff & Gearbox, Clear Water Health and Fitness Club who have all made it possible for me to get to this level, and standing by me each year and helping me to compete overseas.”

He flies out to Slovakia on November 6.
