River canoeist Aikens aim for Fish
Roy Aiken, an experienced Boksburg-based river canoeist, has enjoyed introducing his son, Matthew, to river skills during the past year.
So far, they have spent hours of quality time together, training or participating in adventure canoe races.
They are both members of the East Rand Kayak Club, based at Homestead Dam, in Benoni.
They finished the Belloord Klip 22km race last Sunday, August 18, in one hour and 50 minutes, as the 48th double, with some 70 double canoes finishing the race.
The Belloord sponsored Klip series of races, hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club, presented the first compulsory race of the series in enjoyable spring weather conditions.
The 22km race, from Daleside, through Henley-on-Klip, to Meyerton, a distance of some 22km, was a perfect re-introduction to river races for those paddlers who have been hibernating through winter.
The race boasted the biggest turnout this year, with over 100 boats — mostly doubles — finishing, as 2013 is a K2-designated year for the major events.
