Sunward Park residents fed up with crime

Residents of Sunward Park and the CPF say they are fed up with the rampant crime taking place in their area, and they appeal for government’s assistance to combat crime in their area.

The forum and some members of the community are speaking out following a series of violent attacks in the neighbourhood during the last couple of months.

Thugs are causing anarchy in the community, as they hijack cars and brake into houses, stealing household goods, including jewellery, electric appliances, cash, vehicles and even shoot their victims.

Recently, the occupants of a house in Harmonies Street have had their property stolen, after four men held them at gunpoint.

During the same week a vehicle was hijacked in Spreeu Street.

On Sunday, August 11, at about 3.45pm, one of the area’s CPF members was shot in the leg in a hijacking, which took place just outside his home along Uiterkyk Street.

“What next? How many people must lose their properties or die before we get help?” asks Delene Boyens, a Sunward Park CPF member.

Residents of the area have told the Advertiser that crime in the area is out of control and they always live in fear of crime.

“It seems like the area is run by criminals,” says Boyens.

“As a CPF member, I do not feel safe in the area at all anymore. I have lived here all my life.”

In a letter issued by the CPF to the Advertiser, the forum raises concerns about some streets that have become crime hotspots in the area, and they want the municipality get on board.

“Our local municipality cannot even assist us in fighting crime. We have tried many times to get certain roads/areas closed off, but to no avail.”

On the other hand, Boyens praises the police for doing a good job in fighting crime in his neighbourhood, adding that they rely on them to keep residents safe.

“So this is not a condemnation of the police services, but more needs to be done about crime in their suburb.”

According to Boyens, members of the CPF are working with the police and various community groups to address the concerns, but the number of violent crime incidents in the area is a clear indication that whatever is being done to prevent crime in the area, is not enough.

“I think the crime in the neighborhood has increased and it’s not really feeling like a safe neighborhood anymore.” says Boyens.

According to Boyens, some residents turn a blind eye to the crime problem and laugh at members of the forum who are trying to bring things back to normal by voluntarily conducting random patrols of the area.

“Despite some residents’ negative attitude towards the CPF members, we will continue to do our best to reduce crime in our communities, and even assist those who mock the good job we do for them as well.”

Boyens also encourages residents to come together and make great efforts to keep the scourge of crime off their community.

“We encourage community members to get involved in crime prevention by joining the CPF structure in the area. Enough is enough now!”
