Ekurhuleni encourages converting to prepaid

Many Boksburg residents, like Vino Naidoo, may have considered converting to prepaid electricity, but were a little hesitant not being fully informed about how to go about it, and whether the change would save them money or not.

Following an enquiry with the municipality on the issue, Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson, Sam Modiba, says that residents are encouraged to make use of prepayment metering.

“This service is a more modern method of dealing with the measurement and payment of electricity.

“We have more than 1 500 electricity prepayment vendors throughout the metro and surrounds, ensuring that the purchase of units will become an easy and routine exercise,” says Modiba.

He says customers can make use of the subsidised cost of R660 to convert to a prepayment electricity meter.

“This will include all costs related to the installation of a prepayment meter, allowing the user to monitor and control electricity consumption daily, by means of the in-house display.

“There is no difference in the rates paid by prepayment customers, and it certainly is not more expensive than the rates payable on conventional meters,” he says.

  1. This seems to be the way to go in order to manage your consumption better. Can someone please contact me via mail, with more information as to how I go about converting to Prepaid electricity, what the cost is and what the Council is paid extra to the prepaid electricity that I but?

    Thanks

  2. My daughter converted to prepaid months ago and they are still getting billed for electricity by the council. When they enquired they were told they must pay the thousands in the meantime and it will be refunded to them when the person who installed their meter hands in his job card!! So they are paying for their prepaid now they must still pay for some bogus interim reading just because some people at the Council are too lazy to do their job properly. They were told there meter would be disconnected if they didn’t pay the other bill. Each month more amounts are being added for “electricity”!

  3. I will not recomend anybody to install a pre paid meter. My pre paid meter was installed 7 months ago. They are still chargeing me for eleckticity plus I have to buy pre paid. And all they tell you is that there is nothing they can do, like Jenny said in her letter you will just end up with being disconected if you dont pay. And Nobody is willing to help. Sad as this can realy help to control your elec. consumption.

  4. In my opinion stay as far away as possible from pre-paid. It is the easiest way for municipalities to milk people. Go and ask anyone in Ekurhuleni if the are happy – and that the pre-paid does not cost more than normal as stated in this artical they are talking crap…

It has a sliding scale and I currently pay R4.56 per unit.

This is a ripp-off of note – even my maid says in the township in Klerksdorp they get 18 units for R100.
