The Owls hold their heads high

Although none of their teams qualified for the Predator League semi-finals, Boksburg Rugby Club has had a great 2013.

Even after the first team lost 57-27 at the hands of Pukke last Saturday, the club will know that this was one of their better seasons.

Last Monday the South African Rugby Union confirmed Boksburg as one of the 14 nominees for the Community Cup Championships wildcard spot.

Five teams will be selected from the list of nominees, and The Owls could be one of them.

This is after the local club was named the Valke Unions Club of the Year.

“It was a good season,” says the club’s chairman Sean Scheepers, who feels Boksburg has improved a lot.

“This is the best season we’ve had since I have been here 15 years ago.”

As far as the Predator League goes, Boksburg’s teams did not do too badly.

The first team finished at third in their pool, while the second team got the runner-up spot.

The third side also finished second, the u-21 team were third and so were the u-19 side.

“All in all we did quite well,” says Scheepers.

Scheepers does not want the club to rest on its laurels and plans are that the players be given a month’s rest and then head back to training, readying up for the Community Cup.

“Looking back at the season, Boksburg was able to beat Centurion, who represented the Blue Bulls Union at the Community Cup, and although the lost to Brakpan, they were competitive on the park,” he adds.

With the second and third teams winning the Valke League, they also showed that they do have depth in the club.
