Old Boys chase down United’s 183 target

United set out their target from 47.2 overs with all of their players getting a chance to face the CBC attack – but the latter group proved too good this time around.

Home side CBC Old Boys maintained their winning form on January 26 with a convincing seven-wicket win against United as they maintained their 100 per cent win record this year.

Asked to chase down a total of 183, the home side was aggressive in its approach, which saw them win after 35.4 overs of batting.

This was a solid chase led by the heroics of in-form Ryno van der Merwe and Sherwyn Pillay, who scored an unbeaten 54 and 51 respectively.

Jaydin Liebenberg, who partnered with van der Merwe as they saw their side to the finish line, added 24 (unbeaten), while star opener Mark Pearse added 33.

All of United’s triumvirate of Branden Grutter, Sibusiso Khoza and their captain Justin Gamble took one wicket apiece – the only wickets lost by the hosts – but it wasn’t enough to stop the Old Boys juggernaut, which has swept all put in front of it thus far of the second round of league play.

Pillay also put in a solid shift with the leather to complete an honest performance as he finished with 2/37 in his allotted bowling overs. Teammate Rynard de Lange – who didn’t get an opportunity to bat – was the second and only other Old Boys player to take a pair of wickets.

Away-side skipper Gamble finished as the top run scorer for the visitors with 31.
