It is time to make the ratepayer a priority again

It’s good to know that the mayor of Ekurhuleni considers changing street names and landmarks a priority. The fact that it’s a waste of money is obviously irrelevant.

What is relevant is ratepayers, the metro’s customers (hopefully the mayor and his loyal team cadres, who serve as his committee, have a vague idea what customers are).

First, we would like to know the secret scenario surrounding the metro’s spending of R6-million on “a new home for the Ekurhuleni dog unit” at the Boksburg stadium. Why was the latter never finished? Classification: wasteful expenditure.

Second, the construction of taxi ranks in Vosloorus and Katlehong. The costs were way over their budgets and they took more than two years to complete. Classification: possible fraud.

Third, why does it take so long to repair lifts? Surely repairing lifts in a council-owned haven would be classified as a priority. Similarly, the lifts have been out of action in the Boksburg municipal building for months. Classification:incompetence.

Fourth, vacillating on repairs to the Boksburg library. Classification: more incompetence.

There are many other ratepayer priorities that are ignored or dealt with in a haphazard manner. Repairing street lights and repairing/resurfacing roads come to mind. But the mayor is all fired up about street name changes.

What is a concern is how come we are informed that the metro gets clean annual audits?
