Boksburg Grade 12s ready to nail final exams

All the schools interviewed said they are confident that their learners are fully prepared and ready to nail the exams with confidence, with some saying they have set themselves minimum targets to achieve in this year’s matric exams performance.

With just a few days to go before final exams for the matric class of 2019 kick off, the Advertiser asked several local schools if they feel they have done enough to prepare their learners for the challenge.

  • Reiger Park Secondary School

The acting principal at Reiger Park Secondary School, Raymond Tekana, said he and his team went beyond the call of duty to ensure that their 2019 Grade 12s are fully prepared for their National Senior Certificate examinations.

Tekana said the school implemented the Department of Education’s compulsory Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP) and their internal matric programmes, and the learners completed their syllabi.

The school used the prelim exams to gauge Grade 12s’ readiness and thereafter engaged in revision work to address a few identified holes.

“We are 99 per cent confident that our learners are equipped with the knowledge that will empower them to get ready to tackle the upcoming final exams with confidence,” said Tekana.

  • Oosrand Secondary School

Deputy principal Delyse Sampson said their team went all out and made sure that they leave no stone unturned to prepare their 234 learners, including those who needed special attention, for their final exams.

“Yes, we are confident that our Grade 12s are equipped with the valuable knowledge that will help them nail their final exams. We made sure that our learners participated in both our internal and the department’s compulsory SSIP,” said Sampson.

“The learners have completed their syllabi and recently started to engage in revision work to ensure that all learners are fully prepared for their examinations.

“We have also been able to continuously implement a number of improvement interventions, including making the school available after school hours for the children who come from informal settlements to study and get to spend extra time with their teachers, and we have also called on all parents to come to the party and monitor their children studying at home.”

  • Boksburg High School

School principal Helene Boshoff said the school is ready for the upcoming final matric examinations.

According to Boshoff, the syllabi were completed prior to the commencement of the prelim exams last month, and educators offered extra teaching time beyond the official school hours, including Saturdays.

“We are currently discussing the prelims with the learners to address any problems, and we are confident that our learners have been given all the tools to make a success of their final exams. In terms of the results for the Class of 2019, we trust that our learners will live up to our 2019 motto, ‘Make it Happen’,” Boshoff said.

  • Villa Liza Secondary School

Sylvia Lepheana, Villa Liza Secondary School principal, said the school is also ready for the final matric examinations and is confident their learners will excel during the final exams because the school took additional measures to equip the learners with the valuable knowledge to deal with their exams.

“We had holiday classes during the course of the year and are still continuing with our afternoon classes, which run from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, five days a week. The school went as far as making sure that those who fail to attend classes during the holiday were fetched from their homes,” Lepheana said.

  • Windmill Park Secondary School

Although the school has been without a head since late last year when the former principal of the school, Thabo Mokgwetsane, resigned, one of the educators at Windmill Park Secondary told the Advertiser that the team feel they have done their best to equip the learners with all that they need to take on the the matric final exams.

  • Hoërskool Voortrekker

Deputy principal Gerhard Joubert said: “I believe that our Grade 12 learners are ready for the final exams. We worked hard to do everything that we had to do. We have created a learning environment for the learners during classes and after school. We have a plan of action and believe our learners will do well this year if they prepare for the exams.

“The school would also like to wish our learners good luck for this year’s exams. We hope that they prepare well and may they perform to the best of their abilities.”

Matriculant Tamzin Prinsloo said: “The upcoming exams have me on my toes as I’m constantly stressing about how good I’m going to do, is my studying enough or am I ever going go where I want to be. I know how important this year and the finals are.

“It can make or break my future. I deal with the stress by convincing myself that I can do it. You have to study, put in all your hours and work hard. It’s also important to build your confidence, prepare yourself mentally and believe in yourself and believe how good you can do in your final exams.

“You can study hard, but if you enter the exam room and your nerves get the best of you or you don’t believe in yourself, it could be your downfall.”

Matriculant Lifa Hadebe said: “The coming final exam is stressing me out, but I cope with it by putting in some effort, going through past papers and doing a lot of revising and rewriting. I also ask help from teachers when necessary. This is a make-or-break exam, so I really need to work hard and commit myself till the last paper. I would also like to wish the matrics of Hoërskool Voortrekker good luck and I really hope that we can get a 100 per cent pass rate this year.”

“Our school motto is ‘Reach the Summit’ and we want all our students to reach the summit.”
