Local learner wins Sports Achiever of the Year Award

The achievement made the Grade Two learner the youngest woman to ever win a sports award in the category.

Summerfields Primary School learner Salaamah Mahomed (8) achieved the unprecedented when she was named the Sports Achiever of the Year at the Ekurhuleni Women in Sports Awards (EWSA) held at the Destiny Hotel and Conference Centre in Kempton Park on September 20.

Salaamah, who made the shortlist of finalists in the category following a proposal by WAKO South Africa and Full Contact Martial Arts Association (FCMA) for her nomination, beat Nthabiseng Masha (Olympia Park School) and Noluthando Mtshweni (Ekurhuleni Netball Association) to the award.

The City of Ekurhuleni, in celebration of women in sport and encouraging girls to take part in sports activities every year, give the awards in 16 categories, adding the value to the development of women in sports.

The awards are aimed at providing recognition for individuals involved in the growth and upliftment of girls and women in sport from grassroots level through to elite professional level, and their achievements over the past 12 months.

Valuing the development of women sports and promoting social cohesion of young girls to give them the equal chance to succeed in sports, WAKO and FCMA stay on the course of promoting gender equality in sports and encouraging girls all over the world to start with kickboxing and martial arts.
