Injury ends East Rand United skipper’s season
The setback will have ruled out the skipper of the Valke Peregrine League final for the second year running – with United tipped to make it back to the final.
East Rand United have been dealt a significant blow after their captain Fanie van Staden was ruled out for the season during their ultimate match of the Carlton League against Centurion on June 9.
The number eight suffered a serious knee injury which required repair surgery.
When the Advertiser spoke to the skipper on June 19 about his recovery process, he said: “I have to walk with a knee brace for six weeks because I only have limited movement. After that, the rehab starts with the physio.
“I’m just sitting at home for now because I can’t walk without my crutches.”
Van Staden didn’t complete the match in last year’s final against Vereeniging after a horror landing which followed his involvement in an aerial collision in the late stages of the second half.
United ended up losing that match.
Van Staden’s fellow loose forward teammate Jonathan Botha has been leading out the team in recent matches in the absence of incumbent vice-captain Calvin Jantjies, who has just returned from injury. – @SabeloBoksburg
