Mbenge celebrates winning welterweight vacant title

The tournament was presented by Golden Gloves.

Welterweight boxing star Thulani Mbenge claimed the vacant IBO welterweight belt after stopping Gabriel Chaves of Argentina at Emperors Palace on Saturday, June 23.

The champion knocked out the 32-year-old Chaves in the seventh round to improve his record to 14-9; 11 while his opponent dropped to 26-4-1; 22.

The fight was scheduled for 12 rounds.

  • Junior featherweight – four rounds: Ayabonga ‘’Jay Jay’’ Sonjica won on first-round TKO vs Tumelo Matsane;
  • Middleweight – six rounds: Wade Groth won by unanimous points decision vs Andile Mntungwa.
  • International super middleweight – eight rounds: Rowan Campbell won on eighth round TKO vs Malkhaz Sujashvili.
  • International cruiserweight – 10 rounds: Thabiso Mchunu on by KO in the sixth round vs Ricards Bolotniks
