Boksburg crash when needing six runs for win
A bizarre turn of events played a significant role as the high-flying Boksburg Cricket Club side experienced an agonising loss to Springs Old Boys in Springs by two runs on Sunday, March 12.
Boksburg, who needed just six runs in 10 overs, suddenly lost their last four wickets to hand Springs victory.
Old Boys played well, and were led by Zurber Turkey, who fell just short of a ton with his 93. They also bowled relatively well with all of Irfan Hansrod 3/39, Danish Zafariabal 3/48 and Turkey 2/29 delivering on the day during the Eastern Cricket Premier League encounter.
But while the visitors did their part by maximising their batting innings and limiting the visitors to 211 all-out, it was the eyebrow-raising finish that left Boksburg with all of the questions but no answers.
Boksburg won the pre-match coin toss and Adam Forbes elected to bowl.
During the interesting chase, all was pointing to a successful chase-down by the visitors.
Boksburg’s hopes however, were abruptly crushed as all their four remaining batsmen were adjudged out via LBW by the umpire to hand the hosts the fortuitous and unforgettable victory.
It’s been a time of enigmas in the world of sport in recent days, with this episode coming just four days after Barcelona overturned a 4-0 deficit to become the first side in UEFA Champions League history to come back from a four-goal defeat and still advance to the next round at Paris Saint-Germain’s expense.
“Unfortunately, some questionable LBW decisions of all the last four wickets put an end to our chase, losing by two runs. That’s cricket I’m afraid,” said Boksburg’s Forbes.
Boksburg’s Johan Nel shone with willow in hand with 64 runs. His fellow triumvirate of Hein Cronje (36), Dylan Pananio (27) and former skipper John Haywood (26) made telling contributions.
In the bowling stakes, Haywood showed his experience, producing 3/23; 3 in allotted delivering overs. Cronje and Tyrone Cameron also impressed with 3/45; 1 and 2/12 respectively.
Springs had put up 213/9 in their allotted batting overs. – @SabeloBoksburg
