Ekurhuleni restrictions still on after end gazetted by national – metro
Water restrictions in Ekurhuleni will only end once council has met to discuss the matter, though the way is open.
This is after the national Department of Water and Sanitation published the end of the limits in Gauteng.
Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for the national Department of Water and Sanitation, said the legal aspects of approving the announcement have now been finalised and the announcement was published in the gazette on Monday (March 13).
Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said: “The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Water and Sanitation will have to communicate with its stakeholders and send through an item to council for it to approve the lifting of the water restrictions.”
“Council will have to meet to discuss the matter before communication with all stakeholders is given out.
“The water rationing will be halted immediately when the city experiences more water supply from Rand Water.”
Clr André du Plessis (Ward 23) said the decision to implement or end restrictions is made by the national department, but it is the responsibility of each metro to implement this decision in their city.
“This end of the restrictions has now been gazette; it will be discussed either at the next official council meeting, end of March, or the meeting after that,” du Plessis said.
“After the item to end restrictions in Ekurhuleni is approved, a press statement will be sent out, and only then will the restrictions end.”
Du Plessis said all water restrictions rules and penalties accompanying them will remain in force in Ekurhuleni until the item is officially approved by council.
