Woman busted with R14.9m at OR Tambo Airport

SARS Customs officials intercepted a female passenger to Dubai trying to smuggle over $1-million (R14, 919 606) at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, October 7.

Sars said the female passenger was summoned to Customs inspection site where she was requested to declare money in her two checked-in bags.
She was unable to provide specific details of the origin of the money.
Instead, she tried to bribe the two Customs officials with R1-million but the offer was declined.
A search of the two bags found a final amount of $1 082 700.
The female passenger was handed over to the South African Police Service and the goods have been detained for further investigation.
International passengers should be aware that South African Reserve Bank regulations only allow an individual to carry an amount of R25 000 equivalent in currency or rands.
But anything over that must be declared with proper supporting (purchase) documents from an authorized forex trader must be produced on enquiry.
