Rough patch continues for Boksburg premier cricket side

The Boksburg Cricket Club were dealt a second successive defeat in their Easterns Cricket Premier League second round tie, with Actonville Spurs, at Lords, on Sunday, January 24.

The travelling Boksburg side were looking to bounce back from their second round opening match loss against Benoni Northerns the previous week, but it wasn’t to be and Spurs secured an emphatic seven-wicket victory.

Having lost the coin toss, Len Meyer and his troops were sent in to bat first, in what would be a faltering striking innings.

With the visitors’ top order stuttering, it was bottom order strikers Aubrey Swanepoel (32) and the skipper (31) who produced the big runs as they finished as the two top scorers for their side on the day.

Boksburg’s opening and trusted quartet of John Haywood (26), Bruce McKenzie (1), Heinrich Cronje (7) and Freddie Whitehorne (18) could only combine for 52.

Credit must be given to the home side bowlers, who applied and maintained the pressure which prevented Meyer’s men from gaining momentum.

Boksburg just never got going and finished with a hard-to-defend 134 all-out, after 43 overs.

Spurs made an aggressive start to their chase and top order strikers Uyasan Govenden (47), Curtley Wewels (19) and skipper, Kyle Degambur (18), combined for 84 to all but secure maximum points for their side.

CJ van der Walt and Ridwaan Daya assumed striking duties and their respective scores of unbeaten 19 and 21 saw their side over the line during the 21st over, as the visitors left with the unwanted ”L” next to their name again.

Shakeel Ahmed Hussain and Xolile Nkomo made nuisances of themselves to the Boksburg batting pack, as they both took hat-tricks – finishing with 3/30 (one maiden) and 3/23 (two maidens) after nine overs, respectively.

“I have to give credit to the Actonville bowlers,” said Boksburg’s Meyer.

“They were too good for us on the day and we were outplayed at all facets of the game by a more motivated side.”

* Meanwhile, four points were equally shared in the Tembisa and CBC Old Boys game, which was rained out.

CBC will next be involved in a heavyweight clash against the high-flying United Cricket Club, on Sunday, while Boksburg make a trip to Tembisa. – @SabeloBoksburg
