Spurs edge Boksburg in Premier League opening week

The Boksburg Cricket Club suffered a desperate one-wicket loss to visitors Actonville Spurs in a high-scoring match at the Prince George Park ground as the 2015/16 Eastern Premier League season got underway.

Having lost the toss, Len Meyer and his side were sent to bat first during the encounter on Sunday, October 4.

Following a shaky start with the bat, Boksburg found themselves in trouble deep into their innings as they stood at 139/9.

It all looked doom and gloom for the home side before an influential tenth wicket partnership of 101 between Ruan du Plessis and Jeremy Newton took their total to challenging heights of 240 after 41.3 overs.

Actonville skipper, Kyle Degamber, led from the front in his side’s chase as Spurs got going from the onset.

The skipper, Spurs’ third wicket, smashed 74 on top of the exploits of opening duo Curtly Wewers (36) and Ahmed Mohamed (58) as the visitors’ top order paved the way for the nail-biting win.

The visitors reached 241/9 following 47.3 overs.

Boksburg batsman Ruan du Plessis deserves special mention for his 83 runs.

“Playing without five of our top players made the match really difficult for us,” said Boksburg’s Meyer.

“The performance of Jeremy Newton stood out as a player to help us out.

“The wicket played very well for both sides on the day. Our total was very defendable.

“Our fielding, however, on the day was very poor and that cost us the game. Actonville was 200/3 at one stage and we fought back but just could not pull it through.

“They won but I’m still proud of the boys – they gave up and kept fighting.” – @SabeloBoksburg
